International Protection Considerations with regard to people fleeing northeastern Nigeria (the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa) and surrounding region – Update II

Updated considerations from the UNHCR regarding people fleeing northeastern Nigeria. According to the UNHCR  counterinsurgency efforts are reported to have become more effective. The insurgents do however continue to pose a considerable security threat. There are still a considerable amount of internaly displaced persons in Nigeria and people have also fled to neighbouring countries. There are reports of widespread human rights abuses attributed to both insurgents and security forces. The UNHCR calls upon States to suspend forcible returns to this part of Nigeria. According to the UNHCR many persons fleeing northeastern Nigeria may meet the criteria for refugee status.
